Offtopic / Re: Other games I play...

If you're lazy and like AoE2 then definitely check out AoE2:HD on steam. It was -75% off around christmas so I bought it for 5euros.

The graphics aren't really updated, the only changes I noticed were the water and fire effects look more HD. The multiplayer is way better though. It also has ELO and works through steam if you want to play with friends. There are also some slight gameplay tweaks.

I think voobly is slightly better, that's why I said the HD edition is for lazy people :D. If you don't want the hassle of creating a voobly account, installing voobly & patching AoE2 yourself + possibly having to fix the resolution or color bugs. Then the HD edition is right for you.

Suggestions / Re: Tournament points
« on: July 11, 2013, 06:41:06 pm »
Most of your "problems" can be solved by adjusting values in the calculation of the amount of points you receive when the match finishes.

Having such a system would mean you could do more tournaments without having to constantly have a referee. (it's just more streamlined)

Of course the openttd community is fairly small and so your way of controlling it works fine. It was just a suggestion.

Suggestions / Tournament points
« on: July 11, 2013, 09:40:49 am »
Just read the news that tournaments will give you 1000 points for winning and 250 points for loosing. This seems crazy to me, I understand you obviously want to promote the idea of tournaments, but 1000 points?  :o

I think it would be better if you implemented an ELO system then the rankings would actually be based on how good you are compared to another person. For example with the current system I could just keep playing against a bad player and each time receive 1000 points! With an ELO system if the player is worse than you, then you earn diminishing returns.

I play another game and there they used to have the system you have now, fixed amount of points per win. So very quickly the "best" player become the person who had played the most times. Now they have an ELO system and somebody that has played 1000 or 100 times makes no difference. The rank is based on who you beat.

Side note: This system would probably be better for all of the servers in general, but I never really took the point system seriously so I never suggested it. Now that you are making tournaments I thought you might want to look into  better system that actually represents a players ability to play the game and not the amount played.

Lol wiki (I found some interesting info for values when I was implementing an ELO system): http://leagueoflegends.wikia.com/wiki/Elo_rating_system
Trueskill (Elo on xbox): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TrueSkill
Glicko (another version): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glicko_rating_system

I think Elo, glicko and trueskill have the most documentation.

Here's a link explaining how to apply Elo in a game where there are multiple ranks possible (not just 1 winner and 1 looser): http://sradack.blogspot.be/2008/06/elo-rating-system-multiple-players.html
You don't need that in your current system, but if you for instance want to give every person in a game some points then you might be able to use that.

In windows open command prompt. Type: tracert www.n-ice.org

That way you can find out why it laggs. (It displays the route from your pc to the server and if you have lagg some numbers will be pretty high)
Somebody once told me that you can then give this info to your ISP and ask them to check / fix it. (Since most of the time the problem is one of their routers - nothing you can do about it), but I've never tried it myself.

If all of the numbers are low, then it's something else (Maybe an extension / plugin in your browser)

EDIT: Just realized this is from May - oops

People should check out OpenRA
It's a remake of C&C RA and some other old C&C titles.

General / Re: New set of punishments

Well the only thing I'd change from my experiences is that admins should only interfere when another player complains.

I experienced two occasions that I remember quite well where we were just having some fun on the server (in other words everybody was in on it or knew what was going on) and then an admin logs in to check on things and suddenly the kicks and tempbans start flying.

Of course this is kind of a strange request since this means people are not strictly following the rules all the time, but if nobody is complaining isn't everybody happy? Aren't the rules in place to ensure the enjoyment of all players? If they are already enjoying themselves isn't it already achieved?

Probably an odd suggestion (or maybe it looks like I'm just trying to get away with breaking the rules), but food for thought.

The only interesting punishment you suggested was muting. Then verbal insults just result in a 5 minute mute so the player can cool off. The rest just sound like they would escalate the situation instead of help it.

If somebody breaks the rules and then his company is locked I don't think this will make him happy so he'll probably just start spamming chat and breaking more rules. So then you'll probably mute him, but then he'll start boiling and in the best case just leave the server - but wouldn't just kicking him in the first place have been a better solution?

I don't think the ways of punishment should be changed, maybe just the execution. (But I can't comment on this since I have no idea what your methods are)

Another thing I can point out is that suspending a players account or resetting his points or achievements is only interesting for players that care about them. Somebody who is constantly just ruining the atmosphere on the server obviously doesn't. (So will it have any real effect apart from the player just shrugging his shoulder "Oh well")

I agree with Andreas' post.

That does make me wonder a few practical things:
Are the old punishments just too harsh?
Do you like some, or all of the new punishments?

- Depends on the community you want, harsher punishments make for a more serious game (serious players etc.) soft punishments will attract a different crowd. (Player are probably more relaxed when they don't feel like there is a tempban waiting for them if they goof off a bit)
- I agree with what you wrote about the new punishments in your other post.

Server 5 Temperate Long Goal (15 Bilion Goal) / Re: this SHOULDN'T happen
« on: September 06, 2012, 02:03:09 pm »
Sorry if I come across in a certain way, I will try to explain: Some things I just think are logical. When these things aren't done I start to wonder why not.

For instance here ST2 makes a post about problems with industry funding - great.
In his next post he says there were some discussions on IRC that they are currently looking into, but he doesn't summarize what. So either you had to have been there or... Yea. So that kind of kills the discussion. (How can we discuss something we do not know)

It also seems that the N-ice is only looking for members that have exactly the same vision / mentality as the admins. (In other words you need to have the same style of playing and be very technically minded) - If this is really what you want then it appears I joined the wrong community.
I like the diversity in opinions and ways people do things. I hate to break it to you, but not everybody is a server wizard and wants to know the ins and outs of how servers work, but that doesn't mean they don't want to contribute. But obviously they can't here, because RTFM, then make suggestions or GTFO. (I don't even think you can deny this one, since all suggestions by me are met with "aah - lazy, bla bla bla". All I can say is that if I wanted to know exactly how openttd servers worked and all the settings then I'd probably make my own...)

Geert isn't techinically minded and knows nothing about server stuff - as far as I can tell, but he is your top player and his opinion is thus listened to no matter what. When I made a suggestions to raise the terraforming limit I hate to battle and look up all sorts of stuff to even get considered. So I think this is an example of why I don't think all players are equal (Or all opinions)

Also when you talk down to people and just say "End of discussion" you're not resolving anything. This just creates tension. It's just like you're talking to a child. (As I already said talking down to other players) So this gives a perception that you think you are better than the rest. Which you are not.

As for the discussion at hand I think Der_Herr's suggestion is good.

Now this post will probably be dismissed with some or other reason, or I'll be told it's in the wrong section, but each time I make these posts I just hope I help you think outside the box for once.

I never know when to stop - well I can't just let you talk shit about me and not defend myself now can I?

Suggestions / Re: Change of rule 4 (partly "the 50% rule")
« on: September 06, 2012, 01:22:16 pm »
I agree with Geert, but in addition there should be a seperation between industries like Forest, Coal mine, Iron mine,...(1) and Lumber mills, Power stations, Factory,...(2)

For the 2nd group I think it's acceptable for two 20x20 stations (1 for loading, 1 for unloading). Since you an have that many trains going to 1 industry.

For the 1st group not even one 20x20 station is required. As other players have said a 2x7 or 3x7 station should suffice. As a rule of thumb I'd so only allowed to occupy 1 side of an industry.

Another reason is that industries in the first group cost a few mill to fund, while the second group costs under a mill.
