Introduction / Re: Hi
« on: March 30, 2015, 08:47:45 pm »
It's been almost a year now and I decided to pick this game up again. I seem to have lost my IRC account (like everyone I've heard?) so no more admin rights for me ...
I'm also unable to login as admin (probably because I just forgot my admin password) so I'll have to look into that as well.
Hopefully that gets fixed soon so I can force myself into other comps again to truly help people again when they say I can, instead of first taking 10 minutes to explain how to type "!invite imus".

It's nice that the first guy that saw me online again was Gopher.  He says he doesn't see the other guys that much anymore. Is it because everyone is taking a little time-off like me? or just his timezone making him miss everyone?

I kinda missed this place so I'll try to get online more often again.

Suggestions / Re: Multi-companies... allowed?!
« on: June 12, 2014, 06:53:46 pm »
If I recall correctly, ST2 has been warned before about the way he describes himself on this forum. I don't really see his behavior changed here. Therefore I will reply with the obvious answer to the original "question" on this thread and close it for everyone since I do not expect any other meaningful replies.

Is resetting your company and creating a new one allowed on n-ice servers?

A) You are doing this to bypass the limits of the server to give yourself an unfair advantage (like terraforming).
NOT ALLOWED (risk of instant ban)

B) You are doing it to annoy other players / admins by spamming the delete/create.
NOT ALLOWED (risk of instant ban)

C) You are doing this to hunt for an achievement and would stop at the slightest complaint.
Technically ALLOWED on condition that it is not like in case B.
BUT discouraged especially since there is no such achievement. (risk of rather hard punishment if active admin thinks this is case B)

D) You are too stupid for this game and need a lot of restarts before getting that very basic station right.
Since you cannot even get that right, there is no way you are going to comprehend our very easy guidelines on how to behave on our servers, expect a failed attempt at explaining what you did wrong followed by a looooong loooooong ban to let you grow up a bit before playing games like OpenTTD again ;) </sarcasm>

So in short:
Don't do it, and if it happens tell an admin in case they didn't notice it yet. It would probably be solved with little effort from said admin.

you can't handle it? e.g.: send trains to another powerstation for a while. why do you ask for the easiest way?

I didn't say I couldn't handle it, I said it was counter productive. Why would you want to force me to connect to another coal station just because my city recently required a new resource but hasn't built the accepting industry yet? While it is trying to build it my coal is piling up as the city isn't using any ... Not really the most fun way of dealing with it :p

problem 2:...
changed, but be carefully with building roads in your town also.

There's a difference between being carful with building roads and just build a single extention in all direction for improving town growth ... Thanks for changing :) (although testing is needed to see if it's ok now =D)

problem 3:....
the script tries to build needed industries every 1st of month, be carefully with building roads! Sure you will lost 1-2 months but that's acceptable because you have to create the network for the required cargo in meantime.

I don't think that it is acceptible as you got no control over the penalty at all ...

Instead of gaining 4 days you lose 4 in those 2 months so you're 8 days behind on schedule. This difference is added on each update untill you reach growth on every single day. Starting at 500 days this would mean that on perfect delivery you have 250 of these updates (-2 days each time) so that's a total of 2000 days before catching up. 1 day in game = 2.22 seconds so that's a difference of 1 hour and 14 minutes.

EDIT: correction it's -1 day for passed so that makes:
Instead of gaining 2 days you lose 4 in those 2 months so you're 6 days per growth behind on schedule. This difference is added on each update untill you reach growth on every single day. Starting at 500 days this would mean that on perfect delivery you need a total of 3000 days before catching up. 1 day in game = 2.22 seconds so that's a difference of 1 hour and 51 minutes. /EDIT

This also does not seem right at all ... if town growth is over 365 days does that mean it isn't growing in the next year? I find it hard to believe that ...

tried the server first time this morning but had to stop early, now finished it properly and overall I really like it :)
But just like all new (or revamped) implementations there are some issues :p.

Problem 1:
it kept spamming me that my coal supply was too big. It's counter productive to manually reduce the supply (for example send all coal trains to depot) as it prevents the mines you're using from growing for the future.

suggested solution:
make the people revolt against you and destroy your entire stored supply (everything).

alternative solution:
something like: "The city has come up with a temporary solution to the over supply. The requirements are doubled (/ tripled / 10 - fold) for the next month and all growth increases are doubled during this time."

problem 2:
my city couldn't build a factory because there wasn't room between 6 and 13 far tiles.

solution:
it makes more sense to allow it to be built further away like between 10 and 30 tiles far.

problem 3:
you can't start delivering the next resource so once it is needed you automatically fail at the next requirements for a while.

solution:
let the town build the following industry before the resource is needed. Not sure when or how tho ...

problem 4:
too few points

solution:
well it's in test phase, make it more rewarding if you want to motivate test-players :)
Figure out the right amount when testing is over.

Good suggestion, (someone like me might move it to the suggestions thread later if it fits there better tho ^.^).

Reasons I see to disable the setting:
  • you have better control to optimize the space a town has to build buildings (instead of roads)
  • euhm ... that's all?

Reasons I see to keep allowing towns to build roads on their own:
  • new players that don't know they can build roads on their own to aid town growth will never reach the goal (you'd be surprised how many newbies we got on our servers)
  • Building roads early makes the town dislike you which then causes slower growth ... you might want to reconsider building all roads on your own from the start even tho it speeds up the town growth overall.

If anyone knows other reasons to enable/disable this setting, feel free to add them :)
If you are still convinced that the setting should be disabled feel free to respond here, we could set up a vote to see if other people agree with you.

New ideas or improvements to settings like this are always welcome ofcourse ^.^
(but don't expect an immediate change since we need some time to consider the consequences first and if the majority agrees, explain a change to our players as well)

Ban/Unban Requests / Re: Ingame ban "for annoying people" on chat
« on: February 26, 2014, 07:41:17 pm »
See other thread for info and my explanation on my opinion.

Anti-fun behavior (what includes spam, sabotaging, witch-hunting, hateful speech,...) is not a thing we want to see in ours servers! So until you correct yourself you will still banned.
P.S.:One day isn't enough to prove behavioral changes.

from what I understand he did not do anything wrong in this case. So there is nothing to correct. Getting one day to objectively defend himself could be more than enough to show this.

You are correct in that we do not tolerate Anti-fun behavior but this applies to ourselves as well. Please refrain from putting accusations without knowing the situation in the first place like Andreas is pointing out.

Heh, so that's why we didn't see you again ... playing too much other games I see :p

Same for me tho, the games I'm currently playing are:
Arcania (ps3)
League of Legends
Settlers 7
Guitar hero: rock band

+ some Kongregate flash games every now and then

Seems Andreas is right. It is (sinds rules update?) against the rules to build like that.

This means that if a player notices someone do this he is free to call an admin for it. The admin should then explain that it is not allowed.

Although it is a rule break I don't think it's needed to really punish the player too hard for it the first time you explain it. Rebuilding the entire thing seems pointless as well ...
Not entirely sure how to handle it if someone calls out on this case -.-

I mean, it doesn't even give you an advantage since you're taking so much longer to build it and it costs you quite a lot (especially if you pass through water).

Alex is right on most things except the "when playing in singleplayer, ...".
This way of building was actually used on all old multiplayer servers as well. It was before the servers started to always use "realistic acceleration".

In the original acceleration model it was really bad to let your trains go up a tile, so people leveled the terrain across the entire map like this in about every game :p

So basically it's a problem of knowing the mechanics of the game rather than trying to cheat.

ps: it's also why many players keep using short corners as well, since they don't know how hard a train slows down on them ;)

New Server Proposals / Re: Road Only
« on: January 19, 2014, 09:27:44 am »
Agreed with alex :) We're waiting for the new server to get in operation before setting up those new (or old =D) server ideas.

The problem with road vehicles indeed is that they don't generate much profit in the base set. You used the Long Vehicles v4 to solve that but using a newGRF on our servers means they will stay near empty. I guess most people don't realize all they have to do is press that "download missing newGRF" button when they can't join a server with newGRF's they don't have yet ...

Maybe later we could try again with a FIRS asphalt king with a nicer vehicle set ... but I doubt it would work :p

hehe,

AoE 2 is awesome, have you tried playing it online? (use voobly or gameranger).

Apply to become an admin! / Imus' application (example)
« on: December 31, 2013, 08:02:10 am »
  • Nickname Imus

  • Age 24

  • Location Belgium

  • Explanations
I tried cheating the scoring formula once, but an admin noticed it and explained why it was not allowed. I tried to reason with him that I didn't really bothered other players by building my unused stations but he was right, it's against the rules and so I removed them. No punishment needed.

  • The main reason that made you want to become an n-ice admin
Because I noticed alex talk to arno about becoming an admin and I wanted to help this awesome community as well ^.^

  • How much are you online weekly
      varies between 4 and 25

  • What is your current domain of work/ study
computer science! Other question, would I be able to help coding some features? I know this wont be possible right of the batt (pun intended ;)) but I'd like to know if it's possible at all =D If yes, what languages do you guys use?

New Server Proposals / Re: CHANGING SERVER 7
« on: December 24, 2013, 08:47:26 am »
I myself can work around water if needed but newbies tend to build long bridges which is expensive and has a huge signal gap (so inefficient for sending more trains over the same network). That's why I really don't like water except on hard servers.

Planes I just figured out are also not the best idea for newbies. You either have to enable big airports (no noise concern) which makes it REALLY REALLY easy to abuse their huge catchment area, send 1 plane between airports and you're already within our rules of "using" them. I rather not try to explain why certain cases are abuse and others are not -.-
If you don't disable noise concern people use the big airplanes on small airports because NOWHERE in the game does it say which airplanes are small ones. You have to know this from the openttd wiki about planes. So I no longer consider this an option on this server.

If you can reduce some of the costs in the economy it would indeed make this server easier but I have this feeling that it would make newbies feel bad if they switch to other servers because those seem harder for no direct reason o.O (rather not touch those except on hard servers). If you really want you can try to reduce the loan interest (goes well in combination with #1).

increasing map size (#5) or density of industries (#4) would promote a less interesting play style. They seem fine as they are now (so don't touch those anymore just to keep the goal the same, if you think of a good reason I can reopen these for discussion :p)

Only remaining options are thus #1 and #2. I'll try e-Rail soon to see if #2 is enough or if the increased loan is a needed help for newbies as well. (feel free to increase loan to € 1M if you like to give an easy start).

Once those are set to a good value the only remaining thing to do is adjust the goal :p But we'll discuss that once the other parameters are set ^.^

ps: If you set the goal too low and I'm able to finish the game in under 39min (3 years?) when really trying, you're free to increase it as well to better fit that timing ofc :) So no need to be too afraid of lowering the goal ...
