Suggestions / Re: Removing performance on small servers
« on: April 12, 2014, 08:43:40 am »
The current scoring system is based on the idea that we can`t be objective enough to decide a certain maximum score for each server. But after this principle, we ended up making coefficients bigger or smaller and we`re left with a non-uniform scoring system unique for each server.

Personally, I have the greatest confidence in Der_Herr`s scoring implemented on the CityBuilder. It only decays points vs time. You start at a chosen maximum and with an algorythm calculated on the database of games that we have, it is set to decay points in order to reach an amount based on the period that you played.

The goal is very adaptable...with this scoring system we can implement as goal "grow 1 industry to 2295 tonnes or whatever"

With this algorythm , the goal can become whatever we want.

Also, there should be a way to find out if a certain company buys vehicles over the limit. For example if you would buy 100 vehicles in a single month...it would be obviously what they are bought for.

I don`t have anything against performance....I personally like it. But it bothers me a lot that whenever a new player joins, he smashes himself on this wall which most of the times is unpassable since OpenTTD does not have an interactive menu with explanations and in most of the games, the other people playing DO NOT ANSWER.

My point is that we should find a solution to remove the performance as fast as we can and leave the goals with only 1 simple and understandable criteria.

Also, would you agree with a removal of performance on Server 9? Scoring system is not working there so it would be a good place for a test...

My thoughts summed up.

New Server Proposals / Re: Donation for a server...

I saw the server and used it a few times and really appreciate it. I'll be making a monetary donation in the near future.

New Server Proposals / Donation for a server...

So, I was wondering how much $ you need to do a new server, and then I was wondering if I donated that amount, would I be able to ask you to implement the Long Vehicles v4 and the other Long Vehicles v4 on that server. Potentially even make it the second road-only server, with a desert map of 1024x1024.

New Server Proposals / Re: Road Only

So, I've played on the road only map a bunch of times, and I like it a lot. I think there should maybe be a desert version of it, or that the server should rotate between desert and temperate. But I've been playing it as often as I can, while still playing server #3 and a couple others. Thank you guys so much for doing it.

Well, I'm excited to hear that there will be a road only map soon!

 :)

I think the goals should be substantially lower since, as you say, it's harder to make big scores with the road vehicles.

General / Re: Legal?

Thanks for the detailed responses, folks. I understand better now. I want to point out to those disagreeing with Andreas that this player could have built the line without the ditch. I had lines going across that map and I had no need to do what he did.

General / Legal?

Seems this guy dug a valley and built his train line in it. The thing is, it goes across most of the map, and in order to bridge it, I  had to do expensive landscaping. Is this considered blocking? I'm not mad about it, I just want to know if that's what it is considered.

New Server Proposals / Road Only
« on: January 18, 2014, 05:08:40 am »
I would like to see a server which disallowed everything but road transportation. I think there are plenty of servers which are conducive to railroads (in many cases, the guy who gets there earliest and builds trains the fastest will win...). I've always found the road vehicles to be much more challenging, and the variety of vehicles to be more fun. It might even be fun to use one of the alternate vehicle sets that are out there; when I play offline, I use Long Vehicles v4. It is a situation where any of the trucks will serve most purposes, but you have to pay out a little to refit the vehicle for your purpose. The vehicles are much better looking, there is a much wider variety, and so forth. But that could be optional. I would just really love to see a server which had a map that was good for roads (lots of height variations make it more challenging) and didn't allow rail, air, or sea.

It might also be nice if there was just one server which allowed us to use sea or air, one or both. Kind of frustrating when all the oil rigs pop up in a CV match.

Just a thought!

Have a good night!

Paul
