Surely the servers can't be that weak that running some OpenTTD servers lags them?

What specifications are the hardware?

Suggestions / Re: Change of rule 4 (partly "the 50% rule")
« on: May 20, 2013, 06:02:14 pm »
Why is this post dormant? I'm seeing more and more people violating this rule nowadays. We either change it or strictly enforce it.

I always read the rule as "two sides" only. Occasionally if the industry is awkwardly placed I might be forced to be on 3 sides but I'd ensure that its simply one rail or something on the extra side so that another player can still place their station within range with ease.

See screenshot with "2 sides" and then one using "3 sides" but still room where the other stations both touch the oil easily enough.

Suggestions / Re: [Poll] Competition on secondary industries
« on: May 19, 2013, 04:02:49 pm »
I agree the lumber mills could be a bit of a problem.
For other industries I don't think the effect is that bad. Primary industries are quite expensive, so take a long time to pay back. Factories and such are not that big of an advantage. Yes I agree the point of competition is slowing the other player down for some part. Maybe it is worth to exclude the lumber mill (if the private suggestion is implemented) But such details can always be discussed at the end of the poll

Alternative is to make the lumber mill as expensive as primary industries (if possible)

If you make funded industries private you:

a) no longer have a competition server
b) you 99% guarantee the first person who builds a funded industry wins the game.

People funding even 6 months or a year later have no chance.

In the case of server 3 the funded industry is always lumber. There is nothing to supply so the first person to get one has the wood and then makes another fortune off the goods. On a quality competition server (as it is now) you balance the risk of funding it with the possibility that someone quickly notices and then competes with you. It's your choice to make. You can hold off and wait for someone else to fund or take the risk of doing it yourself. The fact most people fund as soon as it's feasible, despite competitors, shows it's not exactly a bad deal.

The fact that it "slows down" the winner is precisely the point sometimes as it equals more points on the scoreboard.

Changing this rule would mean, particularly on server 3, that the game is guaranteed won at around the 2-3 year mark (or sooner) by the first person who builds a few lucrative passenger routes between the top population cities and saves up for lumber mills which are cheap.

Edit: Just on server 3 now. Took under 2 years to get enough free cash to fund a lumber mill. Game over.

My lifes achievements? You do realise i'm a teenager, right? If anything it's worse that you're on here giving me shit - "away on business". You are a middle-aged man, a barclays banker, telling a kid that they are worthless on a forum of an online community dedicated to a strategy-based transportation simulator because he threw some petty insults at you. Now i'm not going to judge you but that doesn't half speak volumes about yourself, so I don't think either of us are in positions to judge each other. Why do you let me affect you? You're making my thread waaay more popular than I deserve. and besides, all of that is irrelevant, this is oTTD ya digg? And btw, I looked at your profile and the awful scores, the irish al was better than you but i'm pretty sure we have played together before, almost definitely. But whatever, if I could mute you from my thread i would because this is dragging on now, you really shouldn't have taken my wood, we wouldn't even be having this conversation but I don't think you care because it seems like you forgot what we were arguing about anyway. If you want an apology you're not getting one, James Blunt.

Everyone else that bothers coming on the forum already knows who I am and what I am like. The fact you are just discovering this now is quite surprising considering you've been a member for "a good few years". I've been here since 2011, would have thought we'd have crossed paths previously if that was the case. As far as I am concerned you are just another to moan about my attitude or the way I play, join the back of the fucking queue mate, you're nothing new and you're nothing special. It's boring me now tbh.

I get the impression you're very special...in your own mind. Your posts distinctly sound like the type of person trying to distract attention from their real life failings. You should get some help - it's sad to see.

You seem to be only person giving "shit" to be honest.

That your new angle? Nice.

Look, you were the one who decided to come and post in my ban thread talking shit about me...

after an admin had to deal with you for being childish and throwing insults on the server...

far from "talking shit", i'm just placing the facts on the public forum so that others can see what you're up to.

nice attempt at trying to play a victimhood card though. not sure you'll fool anyone here though.

Afraid I've never lived in Ireland. Sorry about that.

I was in the UK for a while with work.

The admins here will be able to tell you when my main account for the game was registered but it was a good few years ago from memory.

In any event you seem to have serious "internet tough guy" syndrome. I recommend going back to school or getting a job so you spend time in the real world.

Been playing TT since about 1996 when it came out. Got it from a friend and if I recall it came originally on 6 floppy disks and took about 20 minutes to install. Much fun to be had. Still find it amazing nearly 20 years later that people are still playing it online. But there are lots of tactics and scenarios which mean it's never boring. Playing against others is always more fun too.

Live in Canada with my wife (and dog) and work in web design/development. Always curious of "profile.php?user=al" and wonder if the n-ice guys have secured their GET/POST requests and not just left it open to tampering :D (if you aren't interested in web programming that will mean nothing to you)

I usually play on #3 but occasionally try #1 even though it takes forever and I generally get bored and leave.

Always trying to improve my game but mostly just play for fun. I usually try to make an "efficient" network rather than rushing to win the game with some monstrous mess :D

That`s the risk you take if you place a main system (grain, livestock, oil, wood, iron ore) and a secondary system (goods, steel) on the same line and in the same terminals ^^

Can become a mess relatively quickly.

I tend to prefer finding oil refineries and factories (and if possible food processing) in the same area so I can build one core station to serve all of them. With goods and food produced you need to pay attention. It isn't too difficult. Even on 4 platforms you can have a high amount of trains without jams if you split into 2 approach tracks (with long enough capacity) with "raw materials" and "goods/food" waypoints for the types of train.

"hurrr the rules allow it" etc and have never been around long enough to understand that there is etiquette and morals in this game which, just like IRL, aren't written down in the rulebook.

Except I've been playing on these servers for a long time and when it comes to the rulebook I prefer to actually read it:

"Competition is encouraged! You don't own cities or industries, people can compete with you for any resources and even take the goods your factory produces!"

Notice how it's specifically mentioned and "encouraged" for people to compete for resources.

So please, get down off the "morality high horse". Considering how many bans you seem to have accumulated, you're the last person who should be gesticulating.

a few points

1. that's a pretty accurate description of me
2. It's also irrelevant
3. I, just like you, want to play and not be hassled
4. you hassled me for no reason
5. expect a reaction when that happens

The spotty teenager bit? Thought so ;)

How did I hassle you? I said literally nothing to you and then you start whining about lumber and calling names. I found it revealing when I called an admin to talk to you all you said was "Good luck". Almost as if you didn't think the admins had the balls to put you down. Last time I checked if an industry exists you're allowed to move the resources from it. You seem to have difficulty understanding how competition servers work and it looks like you're incapable of just playing the game and having fun. You also have respect issues for the people running these servers for everyones enjoyment. You need to stop being an internet tough guy. Easy to be a keyboard warrior I guess. Yes, you're very much mad, son.

Now I'm off to play a game or two and give no one any childish nonsense like you. Enjoy!
