players often ask for a list of available achievements. what they usually mean is they also want a description for each of them. the problem is that with the current achievements we're only at the beginning - all of them are still very basic. we plan much more advanced achievements later but right now you often get an achievement for a specific single action - and in some cases if you do an action X times.

the good thing about that is that the number of achievements someone has shows how much diversity he has in his playing style. you never built an aqueduct? well, you're missing out  ;)
so as a generic rule of thumb: achievements reward you if you vary your actions and the servers you play on (because some achievements you can only get on specific scenarios, specific playing times, specific map size and so on...).

the downside of basic achievements is that if i'd give you a list all players would get them very fast. that's why we keep them secret and rather let you try to find them yourselves. not even all admins know them, only the 3 of us that made them up. and we are excluded from the achievements highscores for this reason (would be unfair otherwise). so don't be surprised when admins are as clueless as you  ;)

anyway, so many people keep asking for it so let me at least give you something: the list of all achievements that exist without description.

On server 4 we have just turned vehicle breakdowns off, after a proposal on this thread.

To compensate for the fact that this also makes the server easier we have also made some other changes that were suggested there:
- "larger_towns" setting raised from 4 to 6 (so every 6th town is a big city)
- "initial_city_size" was decreased, so cities start a bit smaller
- "freight_trains" was changed to 3, so wagons weigh a bit more now and you need more engine power

ok i think we had enough opinions. on IRC we also talked about ST2's proposals and we agreed on them too (also nothing was said against them here on the thread):

my humble opinion:
- agree on turn vehicle_breakdowns = 0
-->> this will require a pair of balancing elements/settings:
- Decrease the "larger_towns" (maybe 6 - 1 in 6 is big/City)
- Decrease "initial_city_size" value
- Since trains are power enough, with good tractive effort and no breakdowns, turn "freight_trains" to 3
- keep the "town_growth_rate", as the station spread, vehicles max length and the other values

I think will make games funnier, more balanced.... and well, for now is what I remember  ;D

@ Cossack: if you remember properly, I'm a monster of patience with you, because all actions I've take with you where after warned you several times...   :P
If I remember the correct situation, SuperTrans was truly unlucky, because after several tryings to get his attention, when I locked his company... Bamm... a new player enters, create a company... and that slot... pufff...  ;D  (I think is this one)

haha nice story. but as funny as it is, maybe i should fix it so that locked companies aren't autocleaned anymore  :P

mh, i was hoping that a common picture would form here about which server to convert to FIRS. however, it doesn't really seem that this happens. my gut feeling tells me that it would make sense to simply take the server that is currently the least "successful" one (by looking at the average player count it has). that should be server 1.
it's no goal server, which is probably the reason why it doesn't attract as many players as the other servers. so maybe we should convert this one to FIRS and also make it a goal server (as suggested by alex before)?

And I absolutely don't like the idea of resetiing all scores and starting a new round. If the changes are small (and I vote for them being small and gradual if needed), resetting will not be necessary.

in the beginning we did some changes to fine-tune the formula but it was always applied to existing scores too so they all were consistent to each other. i don't like the idea of gradual changes that don't affect previous games, it means you look at your personal scores and got 2 same games but you got different scores for them. will lead to a lot of confusion among players and probably complaints.

so what i'd rather do is apply the changes to all old game records too and recalculate all scores. but as you can imagine even a very small change will affect especially the TOP 10 players that had a lot of games very much, because it multiplies itself with every game played.
imagine 2 players that both won 100 games and are at almost the same rank. but one didn't care for vehicle efficiency and ran a lot of small vehicles while the other one used fewer big trains. now if i do only a very small modification to the weighting of the vehicle amount it might boost one player 10 ranks up and the other one 10 ranks down.

i can't think of any change that matters and brings in new ideas (like the station rating suggestion) on one hand but on the other hand wouldn't completely turn the current score board upside down (which will lead to complaints from our most faithful players.

this is why i'd always want to do it using a score reset.

also i think it's not that bad to start anew every X months (the current scores are already connected since 8 months). probably we take a lot more time to find good changes and then we'd do the next reset at the end of the year. what's so bad about restarting once a year? many players will be happy for a new chance. it's not motivating for new players to see how they get 10 points for a game and even the guy at rank 20 has 600.
and if a TOP 10 really is good he will get back to this stage on the new highscore board soon enough, why should they fear their standing?

the idea is good but it would need a manual shutdown of the server, change of the settings, and restart every two days. this will be too hard to organize, private life doesn't allow to be here reliably.
so i'd rather say we try it for a full week and then check how it is influenced the server popularity.

but first of all we should still decide on which server. i would want to take a goal server in any case, as they naturally attract more players that care for good competition, which should be the same players that could also appreciate FIRS.

it's not completely random though, there is a specific algorithm behind it. you directly affect the chance of an increase or decrease of production by the amount of cargo you transport from it. more about that here.
